Carolina Cob offers creative opportunities in building and stresses the use of local, natural materials. Our current project uses cob and straw bale construction. Cob is a natural choice for our area since its primary ingredients, clay, sand, straw and water are abundant thoughout the state. See the workshop page for information about half day sessions building a cob wall that will provide a good introduction to the possiblities of working with this type of construction material.

Carolina Cob
Durham based Carolina Cob sits in the middle of the infamous clay soil of central North Carolina - a prime resource in natural building. Our current project involves building a small structure to be used as sacred space on the grounds of a co-housing community. We are partnering with Greg Allen, cob builder extraordinaire, for this project (see his blog) and invite you to be a part of the learning and building process.
We have designed a series of workshops that offer extensive hands on experience in working with natural building materials. Most of our workshops are weekend sessions but we are also offering an intensive week long experience for those who would like to spend more time on a project in preparation for building your own cob or straw bale structure in the future.
Each workshop will begin with an information session on the project to date and plans for the next step of construction followed by a day of actual building. Check out our list of upcoming cob workshops.
Please contact us at workshop@CarolinaCob.com for more information on the workshops. We can offer housing and transportation suggestions if needed.
Anyone interested in working with this project as a long term apprentice should let us know. We welcome your help and enthusiasm!
